The Hellma Group (Müllheim, Germany), a manufacturer of optical solutions and components for the process industries and research analytical laboratories, will acquire Axiom Analytical Inc. (Tustin, California), a provider of laboratory and process sampling equipment. The new company, Hellma Axion Inc., will provide optical precision modules for online spectroscopy in the field of process industries.
“This transaction will represent an important milestone within our company’s history, which aims at further developing our market shares by solutions that fit our customers’ applications accurately,” Luiz Mayer, CEO of the Hellma Holding GmbH, said in a statement. “Moreover, it will offer great potential for more innovative products for the analytics business sector.”
Holm Kändler, president of the newly established Hellma Axiom, spoke positively about the agreement, “With the Axiom Analytical acquisition we will ensure profitability in the industrial sector of the Hellma Group and in addition will focus more on industrial trends such as the increasing automation and growing quality requirements,” he said.
“The combination will enable on the one hand the strategic expansion of our business and the continuation of the past decades’ successful activities” said Mike Doyle, co-founder of Axiom Analytical. “On the other hand, customers all over the world will now have access to products and know-how from the two strongest companies within this market.”
Over the years, the Hellma Group has been successful with several previous acquisitions, in which a team of representatives from both companies continued the integration process: Hellma will take a similar approach this time, with the two founders of Axiom Analytical, Norm Jennings, and Mike Doyle, working as consultants for Hellma Axiom. The Axiom site in Tustin, California, remains unchanged. Support and assistance for customers and suppliers will be provided from there.
Measuring Freshness of Salmon with Handheld Spectroscopic Instruments
January 27th 2025To better determine fish freshness within the context of rapid spectroscopic analyses, salmon fillet was analyzed via hand-held fluorescence and absorption spectroscopy devices across the visible and near-infrared (vis-NIR) range and benchmarked against industry-standard potentiometry and the gold-standard laboratory procedure, nucleotide extraction assays, over a 11-day period.
Applications of Micro X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy in Food and Agricultural Products
January 25th 2025In recent years, advances in X-ray optics and detectors have enabled the commercialization of laboratory μXRF spectrometers with spot sizes of ~3 to 30 μm that are suitable for routine imaging of element localization, which was previously only available with scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDS). This new technique opens a variety of new μXRF applications in the food and agricultural sciences, which have the potential to provide researchers with valuable data that can enhance food safety, improve product consistency, and refine our understanding of the mechanisms of elemental uptake and homeostasis in agricultural crops. This month’s column takes a more detailed look at some of those application areas.
