Nitrate Analysis of Water Samples Using a Benchtop UV-vis Spectrophotometer
December 14th 2016The EPA has established a maximum contaminant level of nitrate-nitrogen in potable water of 10ppm. This application presents results of UV-Vis analysis of nitrate concentrations in water samples, showing that the manual colorimetric method is suitable for analysis of nitrate contamination in water systems.
The Measurement of Oxides in High Calcium Limestone Using Empirical Calibration.
December 1st 2016Limestone is widely used as the main ingredient in cement and mortar, and as an aggregate in concrete and asphalt for building roads. It iis also used as a soil conditioner and is the raw material for making quick lime and slaked lime. During mining and processing operations, limestone composition must be monitored and controlled to ensure proper quality and characteristics are achieved for a variety of products. This application note demonstrates the measurement of carbonates and major oxides in high calcium limestone by EDXRF using empirical calibration.
A Simple, Low-Cost Approach to Improving ICP Productivity
November 30th 2016An accessory to an ICP optical or mass spectrometer is described which speeds sample analysis and reduces carryover. This streamlined switching valve accessory is easy to install and uninstall, requires minimal training, and has a dramatically lower price point
Thickness Analysis of a Natural Oxide Film on a Microscopic Si Pattern
November 15th 2016The MSV-5000 series micro-spectrophotometer is designed to obtain transmission/reflection measurements over a wide wavelength range from the ultraviolet to the near-infrared wavelengths. It allows the measurement of an area as small as 10 µm diameter and the integrated high-resolution CCD video camera enables visual observation of the samples to determine the precise area to be measured. This instrument is suitable for measurement of micro samples or samples with microstructural features.
Simple Method for Sensitivity Comparison of Raman Spectroscopic Instruments
November 15th 2016There is a need for a simple method that can be used to compare sensitivities of commercially available Raman instruments, especially in the demonstration and evaluation process. This short application note will address this need, with an easy method and non-toxic materials.
Characterizing Modified Celluloses Using Raman Spectroscopy
November 10th 2016Characterizing Raman spectra of modified celluloses in pharmaceuticals, food, and materials industries. Raman spectra are compared and analyzed to determine spectroscopic features that can be useful in determination of physical and chemical properties.
Faster Multisite Excitation-Emission Spectroscopy
November 9th 2016Excitation-emission spectroscopy provides information of multiple sites in luminescent materials. As a wavelength selective technique, however, it may lead to prolonged acquisition times when high resolution is required. In this application note we demonstrate how this can be done faster, whilst maintaining high resolution.
Raman Chemical Imaging of Disposable Diapers
November 3rd 2016Raman micro-spectroscopy is a powerful tool to identify the chemical nature of organic and inorganic materials with spatially down to about 1 μm chemical images show the distribution of individual components within heterogeneous materials.
